People come back to a lot of software as investigators, with a question they need answered, and I design for that question first.
Michael Kelly, principal product designer. I designed a wholesale ordering platform’s dashboard and led its front-end build. This is the writing behind that work.
People Log In with a Question
The dashboard was the first page people saw when they signed in, and whatever it showed was the first thing they noticed, so I made it the place for noticing and triaging.
Who Gets to Define the Problem?
An employee naming contest, an AI-assisted search, a room that didn’t like the answer, and a dashboard the paying customers loved and the reps couldn’t use. Five pieces on the question I try to answer before any other in product design: who are the experts, and who gets to define the problem?
